Wheelchair and seating evaluations
If you are dependent on a wheelchair for your mobility, you should be aware of how it impacts your functioning and independence. Wheelchair assessments are necessary for anyone considering using a wheelchair, either power or manual for their mobility.
What is a wheelchair evaluation?
It entails 2 aspects: first, assessing the body as a whole looking at strength, range of motion, functional mobility, coordination, sensation and postural assessments as it relates to wheeled mobility. Second, it involves fully understanding the individuals seating and positioning needs for the use of a wheelchair. The evaluation will be completed by a licensed physical therapist, within the presence of a wheelchair vendor, who will provide limited samples of equipment to make a proper assessment. Once the needs are determined, all appropriate paperwork is submitted to your insurance for approval. Once the equipment has been approved and ordered, a return visit may be necessary in order to ensure that all adjustments are made properly and you are satisfied with the end product.
Why is there a need for a specialized evaluation with a physical therapist?
Determining your needs for manual or power mobility is a very serious matter and needs to be addressed properly. With all of the various options that are available, it is important to be seen by someone who is familiar with the products. In order for you to make sure that you are educated on all aspects of seating and positioning, a PT can make the proper recommendations with a full knowledge of body movement and issues related to improper alignment with respect to sitting in a chair throughout the day.
